Trail access
Bike radar 14 Apr 2008
Trail access is a subject that can get the blood boiling of all of us,
whether we are mountain biker, horse rider or walker. Each camp has its
own arguments and counterarguments. There are 2 personal anecdotes that
immediately spring to mind on this subject:
Once, many
years ago, I was riding on a bridleway in the forest. A walker stopped
me and tried to berate me for cycling through the forest. He told me
that mountain bikers were eroding the trails. He probably expected the

Huddersfield Daily 8 Mar 2008
A LANDOWNER’S claims that a bridleway is dangerous have been vindicated
after a recent incident left two elderly people in hospital. Meltham’s
Frank Manchester has previously warned that a bridleway at Edge End,
which passes through his land, is not wide enough for walkers and
horse-riders to cross paths safely. The route, off Harrison Lane,
Meltham, was upgraded from a footpath – without consultation –
approximately five-years-ago. Following the change of status, a woman
was knocked over and trampled by a horse. |

Ledbury. She said: "I am very disappointed to see that no alternative
route has been provided for either the bridleway or the footpath |
£15M project was meant to find ancient path but lost its way
The Times 5 Mar 2008
A multimillion-pound project to restore forgotten countryside rights of
way is to be scrapped before it has managed to reopen a single ancient
footpath, bridleway or sheep-drovers’ track. Discovering Lost
Ways, a £15 million project, was set up by the Government six years ago.
The scheme upset landowners and campaigners for greater access to the
countryside, who predicted from the start that it would be expensive and
ineffective. Even the agency that was charged with turning paths on old
maps into modern rights of way admits that the scheme became mired in
red tape. The project is now the responsibility of Natural
England, the landscape adviser to the Government. An estimated £4.5
million has been spent on it, mainly in Cheshire and Shropshire, its
pilot areas. |

of a historic road which has been closed since the 1960s. Harringworth

of the road. It ran from Wakerley Road to Laxton Road and was closed by

meeting at Harringworth Village Hall. They were presented with
proposals under consideration by the parish and county councils showing
a proposed bridleway and footpaths if it is agreed the road will not
re-open. |
Land owner not aware of Lost public Bridleway in garden
Garden Law 17 Feb 2008
We own a piece of land and down 1 side of it runs
a public footpath, we have always been aware of it's existence. The
council have recently been in touch regarding a bridleway they say runs
on our land and through a disused quarry. This is the first we have
heard of it. Upon checking with our solicitor who hold the deeds which
go back to the 1700s we can find no record of it, the council have
produced some sort of handwritten document from the 1980s and a hand
drawn map of the area which they say proves it exists.... |

Horse riders should be made to clear up by law
Fenland Citizen 7 Feb 2008
THIS is a final letter in response to Mrs G Irvine's letter "Ever had a
call of nature". Mrs Irvine obviously only read the parts of my earlier
letter which she wanted to read, since in that letter I stated that
horses had no need to come into our road, it being a cul de sac with 'no
through road'.
Thus the rider leaving the "mess" on our road could not have been
"looking for a quicker way home", as she stated. A friend of mine
– a former horse rider – had informed me (as stated by Mrs Irvine in her
letter) that it is indeed a courtesy to return and clear your horse muck
up. As to her comment that I should move to the city – I would like to
inform Mrs Irvine that I have lived locally in the countryside for all
of my life and have no intention whatsoever of leaving now! Finally – as
with dogs – maybe a law should be made whereby horse owners clear up
after their animals or face a fine. |

Residents accept council offer
Eastwood & Kimberley 1 Feb 2008
ANGRY residents at Alma Hill who have a waged a ten-year-campaign for
repairs to the bridleway have accepted a council offer to undertake
basic work.
The residents also urged Nottinghamshire County Council to tackle
drainage problems after they spent last year writing letters and
compiling petitions in a bid to get the bridleway re-surfaced. Local
resident Moya Winwood says the poor road conditions meant the ambulance
service had severe difficulties reaching her husband after he had a
heart attack. She said: "We have been waiting ten years for the county
council to acknowledge their responsibility to repair the footpath.
"It's in a dreadful state and we are fed up with the excuses they have
previously made." Kimberley councillor Richard Robinson said: "At last
we've got some sort of written commitment from the county council that
they will do something. |
Plans drawn up for village path
Buxton News 31 Jan 2008
PEDESTRIANS look set to have a safer route through Hayfield in future
thanks to three proposals for a continuous footpath along Church Street.
Councillor John McCall presented plans drawn up the Built Environment
Action Committee to Hayfield Parish Council at their meeting on January

Street, but then it stops completely, and then starts again. "A lot of
people have complained about it over the years, particularly mums with
pushchairs and children going to school. It is difficult for them to
contend with the morning traffic." The footpath is broken by four
gardens protruding into the line of the walkway.

Horse insurance warning for owners
Insurancewide 1 Jan 2008
The Racehorse Owners Association (ROA) has issued the warning after a
new case being brought to court in 2008 could have huge implications for
owners of horses and the issue highlights how crucial horse insurance is
in reducing the cost of an accident caused by a horse to the owner. The
case involves an assistant racehorse trainer who was kicked by a horse
and suffered injuries so severe that he now needs constant medical
attention. Chris Kinane will continue to receive care for the rest of
his life and as a result, is suing the owner of the horse for
compensation. If he is successful, it will result in horse owners
everywhere needing to check their horse insurance policies to ensure
that they are covered for accident liability
